Karl Leck Bio Since his parents gave him a Sears Tower 120 box camera in his early teens, Karl has been photographing everything in sight. You never know what sort of picture or subject he will show next. While he is well known at international equestrian venues for his action photos of the best horses in the world in competition, he may come to a club contest with a boat, people protesting, an insect, an iceberg, or a model running through the grass. “If it moves, shoot it; if it doesn’t move, photograph it anyway.”
Most of Karl's photography today is done with Nikon digital cameras which give him great versatility to photograph a wide range of subjects. However, after talking to him, you find that he also frequently uses 645, 120 square, 4x5, and rotating lens panoramic cameras. He has published photographs in all formats.
Karl was the first DPS member to achieve Senior Fellow in WIEP for having 100 lifetime acceptances. The Photographic Society of America (PSA) honored him with the Smith Memorial Award as Photojournalist of the Year in 1992. He currently competes in Salon Class in DPS in monochrome and color prints and in digital imaging.
In middle age Karl began traveling with a bag of cameras. As an accredited photographer at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, he completed a goal of photographing on every continent. Some of his favorite photography locations are the NaPali Coast on Kauai, old Lijiang in China, the Cotswold hills in England, the Valley of Ten Peaks in Alberta, the Lemaire Channel along the Antarctic Peninsula, and Pushkar in India.
Karl loves to chide, encourage, and teach people to make better, more original photographs. The good photographer has mastered both technique and the art of seeing. He is happy to talk about any aspect of photography with anybody.
