My interest in photography started as a teenager when my first 35mm was a Yashica range finder. This was a great camera to start with because it was all manual and I learned the basics of exposure, depth of field, film speed, etc. I wish I still had the camera. Since then I’ve had Mamiyas and Canons. I now shoot with a Canon A2. My wife, Susan, shoots with a Canon Elan and together we probably have 15 lenses that we share. In addition to still photography, I’m also getting involved with camcorder photography. When we were in Kenya 4 years ago, I took my 8mm camcorder and shot only about 3 hours of video. When we got back, I edited about 2 hours down to 30 minutes. I was very pleased with the results after adding background music. Recently, I purchased a digital camcorder that should make editing easier.

We love to travel and take pictures. We currently have plans to visit Kenya for the second time in October, 2000. We will be traveling with a couple of professional wild life photographers (Joe and Maryann McDonald) who we have traveled with in the past and have taken classes from. Along with my 35mm camera, I will be taking along my digital camcorder and hope to bring home many hours of video I can edit along with many good slides.

Although I have entered print competition, I enjoy slides most of all. I really enjoy the color saturation of slide film and the sharp projected image. My dream is to have time after retirement to put together travelogues of our vacations, not only for personal enjoyment, but also to share with others. Unfortunately, working full time does take a better part of my time and energy, so I have to limit my photographic hobby right now. I do get energized coming to the competition and going to workshops, after which I spend lots of money on equipment that is under-utilized right now.

Personally, my wife (Susan) and I have been married 19 years. This is the second marriage for both of us; we have no children. We have had dogs and right now we’re on our third cocker spaniel. Annie is 6 months old and I have to say we’ve forgotten how much energy puppies have.

I’ve worked at Dupont for 26 years and, except for 2 years in Aiken, SC and 2 more in Richmond, VA, I’ve lived all those years in the Wilmington area. If not ‘downsized’, I plan to work another 5 and half more years to full retirement and then really work hard on improving my photographic and video skills. ?
