Portrait Of ...
Photography has always been part of her life. Her father enjoyed printing pictures of her in his kitchen "darkroom" until W.W.II caused a shortage of supplies. Later he bought a movie camera to document family activities, and used Kodachrome 10 in his Argus C-3, which she shared until she bought her own in college. While devoting most of her efforts to writing and teacher preparation, she remained interested in photography and was particularly impressed with the "Family of Man" exhibition. She continued to document her travels, her students, and then her own children.
After moving to Wilmington
in 1969, she traded her Argus for a $59 SLR, discovered the 39th Wilmington
International Exhibition of Photography (WIEP) at the Delaware Art Museum,
and joined The Delaware Photographic Society, which was based there. She completed
the darkroom course and began printing her monthly entries in their shared
facility. When the club relocated and lost access to the darkroom, she
established one in her laundry room. She entered the pictorial subjects
the judges seemed to favor, was promoted, and won salon class medals in
slides, monochrome, and color prints. She also became involved in WIEP,
doing many jobs over the years and acquiring the 50 acceptances needed
to be named a fellow of the exhibition. She took on various club duties
and, as delegate to the Delaware Valley Council of Camera Clubs (DVCCC),
served two terms as their president and more recently established the
annual Photo Travel Exhibition circuit. When she met Ollie Fife, a
USIA photojournalist who came to judge a WIEP pictorial section, he encouraged
her to enter some of her "captured moments"” in PSA’s
PJ exhibitions. She found her niche, started exhibiting all over the world,
helped establish the PJ division of WIEP and, recently, was awarded the
PJ diamond tab, signifying the PSA Photojournalist Level IV rating. She
also has star ratings in Color slides, Prints, Nature, Photo Travel, and
Stereo, has judged more than a dozen exhibitions in the US, Canada, and
Europe, and has given slide shows at photographic events across the country,
making many new friends along the way. She also became involved in PSA
activities, eventually chairing the PJ Division for four years, and currently
serves on the board as V.P. of Divisions. Active participation in the
National Press Photographers Association increased her awareness, skill,
and enthusiasm for PJ, and photographing for several local newspapers
over the past 15 years kept her involved in the community, provided unique
access to events, and has led to many freelance assignments. She now uses
Nikons and has won several national awards for her published pictures. Another photographic passion began when she spent the rainy days of her childhood viewing her grandmother’s stereo card collection, which, years later, she inherited. Since her son was involved in Civil War reenactments then, she decided to add some cards featuring his activities and purchased a Nimslo 3-D camera. Now she always travels with it and documents the events of her life in 3-D as well. Five years ago, she established the Delaware Stereo Exhibition, which intrigues many of the WIEP visitors each year. If 3-D photography interests you, she will explain how easy it is to do with the camera equipment you already own! Just e-mail her at Ltmphoto@juno.com. |
