Focus On...
My first memory of cameras was as a young child in a small town in Iowa playing with an old Kodak Brownie camera that my parents had given to us to play with. It was a great toy, and perhaps started my interest in photography. Also, my parents had a later version of the Brownie that they used frequently to take pictures at family gatherings, some of which I still have. Another early photographic experience was going with my brother to his photography school in Seattle and watching him develop pictures in the darkroom and retouching portraits. My first camera came somewhat later, an Argus C3 that was a gift during my college days at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma Washington. I had great subject matter in the spectacular Pacific Northwest and took many slides during our trips to Mt. Rainier, Puget Sound, the San Juan Islands and the Olympic Peninsula. Many of the slides are still in great shape and I still enjoy looking at them. Following graduation from college, and graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, I entered the world of Dupont, starting as a Process Chemist at the Chambers Works in Deepwater, NJ, in 1960. Soon after arriving in Wilmington, I met my wonderful future wife Nancy, and we were married about a year later. Photography, other than taking many pictures during vacations and holidays, took a back seat to earning a living and raising a family of two wonderful children; David, a professional artist, who lives in Lancaster, PA with his wife Jen and two children, and Paula, a manager with Freddie Mac in Ashburn, VA, and her husband Neal and three children. As the grandchildren came along, we had many more great photo opportunities. I first joined the DCC about three years ago, coincident with my retirement from Dupont, and quickly became more interested in learning to become a photographer rather that a picture taker. Soon after joining, I started entering prints in the Commercial Class B print competition and still enjoy doing that. My photographic focus is on the natural world with Longwood Gardens (where I volunteer) providing great subject matter. A second area of focus is along the beaches of Delaware where we have been vacationing for many years, since my wife is a native Delawarean and has family near Rehoboth. My goals are to continue to
improve the quality and meaning of my photographs, doing some work on
close-ups and with telephotos, and possibly exploring the digital world.
I really enjoy being a member of DCC, meeting the many interesting and
talented people, learning new techniques at Instruction Nights, and the
challenge of the print competitions. |
