Karl Leck

Since his parents gave him a Sears Tower 120 box camera in his early teens, Karl has been photographing everything in sight. You never know what sort of picture or subject he will show next. While he is well known at international equestrian venues for his action photos of the best horses in the world in competition, he may come to a club contest with a boat, people protesting, an insect, an iceberg, or a model running through the grass. “If it moves, shoot it; if it doesn’t move, photograph it anyway.”

Most of Karl’s photography is in 35mm which allows the speed and lenses for great action stopping pictures. However, after talking to him, you find that he also frequently uses 645, 120 square, 4x5, and rotating lens panoramic cameras. He has published photographs in all formats.

Karl was the first DCC member to achieve 100 acceptances in WIEP. The Photographic Society of America honored him with the Smith Memorial Award as Photojournalist of the Year in 1992. He competes in DCC in the Salon class in monochrome prints, color prints, and color slides. He has won picture of the year in all 3 categories.

In middle age he started to travel with his camera. With the trip to the Sydney Olympics this year, he will have photographed on every continent. Some of his favorite photo places are the NaPali Coast on Kauai, Lijiang in China, Cotswold Hills in England, Valley of the Ten Peaks in Alberta, and Drake Passage along the Antarctic Peninsula. His favorite event is the Olympic Games of which Sydney is his sixth.

Karl loves to chide, encourage, and teach people to make better, more original photographs. The good photographer has mastered both technique and the art of seeing. He is happy to talk about any aspect of photography with anybody.
