Jano Cohen a Fine Art and Documentary photographer will discuss her work and the art of creating self-published photo books.
Jano Cohen is a fine art and documentary photographr based in the Philadelphia area. Jano will share the process of how she started making photographs at a boxing gym, became immersed in the boxing community, and how she made and self-published an award-winning book, Grace & Grit: Boxing at Shuler’s Gym, co-authored with boxing historian John DiSanto. The awards include “American Book Best Book Award in Photography in 2024,” and the prestigious “Foreward Reviews Indies Awards 2024” gave it an Honorable Mention for Photography. In 2017, Jano was awarded a solo show of photographs about the gym at Open Lens Gallery in Philadelphia sponsored by the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center. For those who can attend in person, the book will be available to browse through or purchase. Questions are encouraged during and after the presentation.
Jano has always photographed dance and she currently photographs for Philadelphia Dance Projects. Her previous career in art was as a dancer. Jano will also share some of her current fine art work that includes abstract interpretations of landscapes, including multiple exposures and beautiful finds in urban decay. Her other past exhibits and awards include Photo Review Web Exhibits; 13th Prize in One Photo Review Exhibit; the “Raw” exhibit at Notes Museum; Honorable Mention in Monochrome Awards; the “Women at Work” exhibit at Photo Place Gallery; and the “Humans” exhibit at NY4PA; and more. Jano’s previous documentary work includes dance in an Alzheimer’s residential unit; the community of Philadelphia’s Chinatown shown at the Asian Arts Initiative; and dance for street children in Rwanda.
